Personal Tragedies

In 1970 Hugh was diagnosed with cancer.  As well, both of Belle’s parent’s health was failing.  Belle was the sole caregiver for all three.  She found strength in her art and continued to show in small group exhibits, not having the time or strength to  create large solo exhibits.  Belle also continued teaching art at Humber College.  In 1973 Hugh passed away.  Within the next year and a half Belle lost both of her parents as well.  Belle was devastated by her loss.  She collected a few of her favorite students and started teaching privately at home.  This group of students was called Group Thursday.  Belle taught for many years and organized exhibits for the group.  Belle’s first sketches after the death of her parents and husband were rich with despair and loneliness.  Belle sketched her way through her grief.
